CS396: Conway Stewart Dinkie No. 570 Fountain Pen and No. 54 Pencil
Set, boxed.
Date: c1970
Size: Capped - 4 9/16 inches, posted
- 5 3/8 inches.
A
beautiful Dinkie set in the purple Lumina resin.
This is a very late set - I would say around 1970 - with the
lever filler. The purple colour shimmers and changes in the
light, and the
whole thing is semi-translucent. Both pen and pencil are in very
good condition. I can see a some plating wear on the two pocket
clips, but as the underlying metal is very shiny
itself, it is not immediately apparent. There are also a few
shallow and light surface scratches to both pieces.
The caps have a small conical gold plated top
button that holds on the gold plated pocket clips that have the usual
Conway Stewart diamond at the end. There is a
single gold plated cap band below the pocket clips.

Fountain Pen
The
barrel imprint is crisp and deep. Opposite is the gold plated
filling lever. The nib is shiny and totally undamaged, marked
"Conway" and "14ct Gold" and is a medium point.

Pencil
This
is a propel - repel pencil that works by twisting
the gold plated cone. It accepts 1.1mm leads, and I have
installed a fresh one into the mechanism, so the pencil is ready for
immediate use. The cap unscrews, and in the end is a barely used
pink eraser. Below this are a few spare 1.1mm leads.
The imprint is still crisp and easily made out.

Box
The original paperboard box is also in excellent
condition, a few corner scuffs being the only damage. It has a white satiny pad.

I have fully serviced this set. The pen writes
very smoothly with an excellent wet and medium width
line.
A very unusual set.
