CS451: Conway Stewart Dinkie No. 550 Fountain Pen and No. 25 Pencil Set.
Date: c1950s
Size: Capped - 4 1/8 inches, posted - 5 inches.
This is a very attractive Dinkie set in lovely
glossy and unmarked burgundy marble casein with black
veining. As you can see, both pieces are in excellent condition
with no damage apparent. Unusually, all the gold plating appears
to be in tact still with no wear. I have taken close-up pictures
below. The caps have a small conical gold
filled top button that holds on the pocket clips that have the "CS"
monogram within a diamond at the top and another diamond at the
bottom.

Fountain Pen
The barrel imprint is crisp and deep and the cute little
filling lever has the "CS" monogram imprinted in the circular end
tab. The nib is shiny and totally undamaged and is in a medium
point.

Pencil
The cap has a very good deep and crisp imprint. The cap
pulls off for access to the eraser holder - the pink eraser doesn't
look like it has ever been used, but it has hardened over the
years. The cone is
also gold filled. The leads are propelled and repelled smoothly
by twisting the cap. I have fitted a fresh 1.1mm lead into the
mechanism so it is all ready to go.

Case
A
lovely paperboard pen case. Like many of the Conway
Stewart boxes, it is coloured to match the pen inside with burgundy and
deep brown, almost black colours prevailing. There are some
scuffs on the outer
surface of the box, but nothing more serious. Fitted inside the
lid is the original instruction sheet.

I have fully serviced this set. The nib writes very
smoothly with a good consistent and wet medium width line.
The nib is also semi-flexible and will produce some lovely line width variation as you write.
A beautiful set and a sought-after model.
