“The Tale of Genji”
was written a thousand years ago in the Heian capital ( now
Kyoto). It is the most ancient surviving full-length novel in
the world and is highly respected as a superb literary
heritage.
The impact of “The Tale of
Genji” in the literary field is significant and
it’s effect is apparent in the traditional culture and
performing arts of Japan as well as the aesthetic sense and
thinking of the Japanese people providing a significant
influence on the culture of Japan. The unique stories are still
read today and are considered as a wellspring enriching the
hearts and minds of people worldwide.
The “Kohi” series is
created by Ms. Misako Azumai - a young Kyo- Maki-e
artist.
The unique ‘Kohi’
designs are inspired by the timeless themes of “The Tale
of Genji”.
The ten different model designs
chosen are based upon a selection of the various stories
recounted in the various chapters of the original book. The
stories recount the secret history of an Imperial family and
recall folklore tales, legend, tragedy or opera. The specially
created artist interpretation of these famous stories typically
use exquisite fauna and flora as well as legendary and operatic
themes. These include;

historic and traditional hand crafted ‘Kyo Maki-e’
techniques.
