AC597 Oak Double Inkwell in the form of a Ship's Capstan

Date: c1920s

Size: Approx 277mm by 198mm; approx. 110mm high

A beautiful polished oak double inkwell and pen rest.  The two inkwells are in the form of ship's capstans, and both contain their original white ceramic liners.  A plaque on the top of the wooden base marks this as a presentation piece which was actually presented in 1925, and it also states that the wood is from the timbers of H M S Britannia.  This is almost certainly the H M S Britannia which was for many years a Royal Navy training ship and moored in Dartmouth harbour.  It was originally the H M S Prince of Wales, a 121-gun three-deck first-rate ship of the line which was redesigned to take a steam engine and screw in around 1860.

Here is a little bit of information on the ship, and there is a lot more on the web:

It is all in excellent condition with a couple of little scrapes and dings to the woodwork, but not appreciable damage anywhere.  Interestingly, I have seen a matching rocker blotter with a similar plaque, so there were probably a number of these made after the ship was broken up in 1917.
