This very attractive and glossy jet black barley pattern chased celluloid Conway is in excellent condition. I have looked over it carefully and I can find no damage on this pen at all. As you can see, the pen has a very nice stately look to it, with a good glossy appearance. This is the slightly later type of the 479 Universal pen with the nickel plated trim and diamond shaped terminal to the pocket clip. Normally, these pens are smooth, but this one has the barleycorn chasing all over cap and barrel. The cap has a black hard rubber top button that holds on the washer-style pocket clip is chrome plated and has the "CS" cypher at the shoulder within a diamond shaped cartouche, and a diamond at the bottom. The button has a lovely deep black colour with no apparent fading. There is no cap band on this pen. The barrel has a short nickel plated filling lever with a circular end tab that also has "CS" imprint, this time within a circle. The barrel imprint is very strong, deep and crisp throughout, and the chasing is also crisp and sharp. The section is in black hard rubber and has a very good deep rich black colour. The nib is a 14 carat Conway Stewart in a most unusual broad stub point.
I have fully serviced this pen. The nib is very smooth in action and writes with an excellent wet and broad width line. It is a soft-ish nib, and combined with its stub point, produces some very attractive line width variation from a fine to a good generous broad with no effort at all.
