SH1653 Targa by Sheaffer No. 1013 Spiral Gold Plate Fountain Pen and Ballpoint Set, boxed (Fine

Date: c1979

Size: Capped - 135mm; posted - 161mm.

A beautiful and near pristine English Targa set.  This is one of the Craftsman range of Targas, whose caps and barrels were made by the Newmark Watch Case Company in the UK.  Both barrels and caps are gold plated and textured with a deeply cut and chased spiral design.  Along with the Filigree Lacque, this has got to be my all-time favourite Targa!  The flat-topped caps have a black plastic disc inset into the top with a pierced pocket clip with the Sheaffer white dot at the top.  The barrels also have a black insert in the end.

Fountain Pen

The barrel unscrews to allow the pen to be refilled.  It is fitted with the original Aerometric-style ink converter which looks unused and works well.  It can also be used with standard Sheaffer ink cartridges.  The nib is a superb 14 carat gold inlaid nib.  It is in a fine point.

Ballpoint

A twist- action retractable ballpoint.  It is fitted with its original Sheaffer ballpoint refill that still works perfectly.  You twist the cap to extend and retract the writing point.

Box

The presentation case is in good condition.  It has a slightly textured brown leatherette outer with gold embossing.  Inside, the lid is lined with a pinkish coloured satin and printed "Sheaffer".  The pad is a tan coloured flocked material. The original pack of two ink cartridges, still sealed, is also in the box.

I have fully serviced this set.  The nib is extremely smooth and writes with a good wet line.

A very unusual model of the Targa - certainly the first of this type I have ever come across, and my all-time favourite finish!  The condition of this set is near perfect and it looks to me like it has never actually been used.
