A beautiful mid-sized black hard rubber W. H. Smith "Seal Pen". W.H. Smith is an English stationer chain that is still very much in business and still selling its own brand of fountain pen, though quality today is much reduced. This Seal pen was almost certainly made for W.H. Smith by Conway Stewart, as many of these pens were. This pen is in excellent condition - I cannot really see any damage on this pen at all. No splits, cracks, chips or noticeable surface scratches. In colour, it is a lovely deep black with no noticeable colour fading. The chasing on the barrel and cap consists of a hatched checkerboard pattern. The chasing is still crisp and shows no wear. The cap has a nickel plated pocket clip that has the "WHS" logo at the top and a ball at the bottom. The barrel imprint is in excellent condition, being both deep and crisp and incorporates a stylised picture of a seal. The filling lever is also nickel plated and has the "WHS" logo on the circular end tab. The black hard rubber section holds the lovely WHS branded 14 carat gold nib which is in a medium point.
I have fully serviced this pen. It fills effortlessly and writes with a very smooth and wet line. The nib is a bit of a beast for sure. It is a BB width stub and it lays down a really great wet line. It will give some effortless line width variation from a fine width to an easy BB width. This would make a super signature pen.
A very unusual pen in great condition.
