CS1172 Conway Stewart Nippy No. 3 Pencil.
Date: c1950s
Lenght: 116mm.
This grey marbled casein Nippy No. 3 pencil works perfectly and is in good cosmetic condition. As is very common with these pencils, the gold-plated trim does show some wear, though it is minimal and hardly noticeable at first glance. I can see a little discolouration to the plating on the point, a small spot of brassing to the lower barrel band, and a little more discolouration to the pocket clip. As usual, the close-up photos below seem to make it all look a lot worse than it does with the unaided eye. The barrel of the pencil shows the typical surface crazing that you get with these old casein instruments, but it is only visible with a loupe (or in the close-up photos below). To the naked eye, it is a very good-looking glossy pencil. The pencil has a conical-ended crown, which can be twisted to extend and retract the 1.18mm lead. On the side of the barrel is a very clear and crisp imprint. The pocket clip looks fine to the naked eye, but under a loupe shows a tiny bit of discolouration, mainly to the shoulder. The black cone is separated from the barrel by a gold plated band, and the point is also gold plated.
I have fully serviced this pencil. It is a propel-repel pencil and it works very smoothly by rotating the black top button. I have installed a fresh 1.18mm lead into the mechanism so it is all ready to go.
