CS1163 Conway Stewart No. 40 Pencil.

Date: c1950s

Size: Length - 131mm.

A very nice and rather unusual Conway Stewart No. 40 pencil.  Both barrel and cap are in green marbled celluloid with gold veining and both look lovely and glossy with no noticeable scratches or other damage.  This pencil is all-gold-plated, and the plating, too, is in excellent condition with no wear noted.  In fact, the only damage I can see on this pencil is a pinprick-sized loss of black colour to the very point of the conical shaped cap top jewel, and the fact that the cap does not want to pull off the mechanism.  This is quite a common problem with these celluloid Conway Stewart pencils and the material does tend to shrink slightly over time, making it difficult to remove the friction fit cap.  This does not hamper the use of the pencil as it is still fully functional.  The factory imprint on the side of the cap is still crisp and deep and very easy to read.  The cap has a black aluminium "jewel" which holds on the gold plated pocket clip.  This has the "CS" cipher at the shoulder inside a diamond shaped cartouche, and the terminal is also shaped like a diamond.  At the cap lip is a wide gold plated band.  The point is also gold plated.   The pencil has a propel-repel mechanism that works by twisting the cap.  Everything is smooth and the lead winds in and out perfectly.  I have fitted a fresh 1.18mm lead into the pencil so it is all ready to go.

An unusual model - the second only No. 40 pencil I have ever had for sale.
