CS1144 Conway Stewart Nippy No. 2 Pencil.
CS1144 Conway Stewart Nippy No. 2 Pencil.
Date: c1950s
Length: 115mm.
The Nippy No. 2 is an exceptionally unusual pencil. I have been lucky enough to purchase a small group of three of these pencils in different colours. These are the first of the No. 2 Nippy pencils that I have been able to sell on my website. Outwardly, these pencils are very similar to the much more common No. 3 nippy pencil. The main difference between the two models is that the No. 2 pencil is operated by twisting the point, whereas with the No. 3, you twist the crown.
This glossy, deep green Nippy No. 2 pencil works perfectly and is in very good cosmetic condition. As is very common with Conway pencils in general, the gold-plated trim does show some wear, specifically, the point and barrel band have lost a small amount of gold plating, but this is not immediately noticeable, and all the other plating is in very nice, bright and shiny condition. The pencil has a conical-ended crown, which can be unscrewed to reveal a space to store your spare 1.18mm leads. This pencil has a full complement of leads still. On the side of the barrel is a very clear and crisp imprint. The pocket clip has the "CS" cypher within a diamond at the shoulder and a diamond-shaped terminal. Thebarrel is lovely and glossy and seems to be scratch-free. The black point is separated from the barrel by a gold-plated band, and the point is also gold-plated.
I have fully serviced this pencil. It is a propel-repel pencil and it works very smoothly by rotating the point. I have installed a fresh 1.18mm lead into the mechanism so it is all ready to go.
