The Esterbrook J is a full-sized pen, being both longer and fatter than the SJ.  This pen is a very nice pearlised light and dark green colour.  It is in excellent condition with no splits, cracks or chips and no noticeable surface scratches either.  I can't find any damage on this pen at all.  Looking closely, the cap is a slightly different shade of green from the barrel, but this is not unusual with these Esterbrook pearlised colours.   The top of the cap and end of the barrel are both decorated with stepped black "jewels".  The pocket clip is ribbed and chrome plated, as is the cap band and filling lever.  All the trim is completely undamaged with no brassing.  The barrel imprint is nice and crisp and deep, and identifies this pen as being American made.  The nib is a No. 9514M medium relief renew-point - one of the more uncommon Esterbrook nibs.  These stainless steel nibs are screw-in units and are interchangeable with other Esterbrook Re-new points.  This one is undamaged.  

I have fully serviced this pen.  The nib is very smooth and lays down a beautiful, wet and generoius medium width line.  Although it is an oblique-cut nib it is on the stubby side, with more rounded corners than an italic oblique nib.  I will therefore not produce that much line width variation - you will get a little bit, but not a lot.  It is, though, a lovely generous medium width nib with a very good ink flow.  Just the nib to use with your favourite shading ink.  

Excellent condition, an unusual nib, and a super writer!
